A zebroid is a special kind of animal called a hybrid.

This means it is the offspring of a zebra and another member of the horse family. Most zebroids are born when a zebra father is paired with a different mother. There are many different names for these animals depending on who the parents are. A zorse is a mix of a zebra and a horse.

A zonkey is a mix of a zebra and a donkey. Some people even call a zebra and pony mix a Zetland. These animals are very interesting to study because they mix different traits together.

How a zebroid looks depends on its parents. Most zebroids look like their non-zebra parent but have stripes like a zebra.

These stripes might only be on the legs or the neck. If a horse parent has white patches, the zorse might have stripes only on its colored parts. A zebra and donkey mix often has a stripe down its back and belly. Some zebroids can even be temperamental or aggressive. This happens because zebras are wild and very strong animals.

Creating these hybrids has a long history. Charles Darwin wrote about zebra hybrids in his famous book, The Origin of Species, in 1859. He even described a hybrid that had dappled markings on its sides. In the 1800s, a man named Lord Morton crossed a quagga stallion with an Arabian mare. During the South African War, people crossed zebras with ponies to help haul guns. In the early 1900s, the U.S. government even bred zorses to study how traits are passed down. Scientists have been curious about these animals for a very long time.

There is a scientific reason why most zebroids are sterile. Sterile means they cannot have babies of their own. This happens because of their chromosomes, which are tiny structures inside cells. Different animals have different numbers of chromosomes. For example, a horse has 64 chromosomes and a plains zebra has 44. A hybrid will have a number exactly halfway between them, like 54. This odd number makes it very hard for the hybrid to breed successfully. This rule was first recorded by a biologist named J. B. S. Haldane in 1922.

We can see how these animals connect to the world around us. Some people use zebroids for riding or work because they are strong. For instance, a zonkey named Alex was born in Barbados in 2005. Another zonkey named Ippo was born in an animal reserve in Italy in 2013. In Mexico, a zebra and a donkey mix named Khumba was born in 2014. Even though they are rare, these animals show us how different species interact. They remind us how unique every living thing can be.
