These animals live in rocky places like mountains and hills. They like to stay on slopes and high plateaus. Some live in grasslands or woodlands too. They need enough plants to eat to stay healthy. These zebras are very important to study. They help us learn how animals live in dry lands.

Mountain zebras have a very specific way of life. They do not live in huge herds like some other zebras. Instead, they live in small family groups. A group usually has one male stallion and one to five females called mares. They also look after their young babies, which are called foals.

These families eat mostly tufted grass. If food is hard to find, they eat bark, twigs, and fruit. They must drink water every single day. During droughts, they even dig in dry river beds to find water underground.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these zebras. In 2004, researchers C. P. Groves and C. H. Bell looked at their groups. They thought the two types of mountain zebra were separate species. But in 2005, Moodley and Harley did a study on 295 zebras. They used genetics to see how the animals were related. Their study showed the two types should stay as subspecies. This means they are very close relatives but slightly different.

There are two main types of mountain zebra today. The Cape mountain zebra lives in South Africa. The Hartmann's mountain zebra lives in Angola and Namibia.

They look different in small ways. Cape mountain zebras have white skin under their stripes. Hartmann's zebras have skin that looks a bit more yellow or buff. Cape mountain zebras also have a dewlap, which is a fold of skin on the neck. In Cape groups, the females are often larger than the males.

These animals have faced many hard times in the past. In the 1930s, only about 100 Cape mountain zebras were left. This happened because of hunting and losing their homes. People have worked very hard to save them. Because of these efforts, there are now over 2,700 in the wild. They are still listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List. This means they still need our help to stay safe in nature.
