The plains zebra is the most common type of zebra in the world.

These animals live across much of southern and eastern Africa. They prefer to live in grassy lands called savannas or treeless grasslands.

You will not usually find them in dry deserts or thick rainforests. They also stay away from permanent wetlands. Because they need to drink often, they stay close to water sources.

This makes them very dependent on finding water to survive.

Zebras have a very interesting way of eating.

They mostly eat different kinds of grass. They have a flexible upper lip that helps them push plants between their teeth to cut them. Some zebras even eat leaves, twigs, or roots during dry times. Their bodies digest food much faster than animals like cows. This means they have to spend a lot of time eating to get enough energy. They are often the first animals to start eating in a new area. This helps prepare the way for other animals like wildebeests.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time.

A British zoologist named John Edward Gray named them in 1824. He called them Equus burchellii. Later, they were given the name Equus quagga. This happened because of a rule called the principle of priority. This rule says the oldest name should be used. Scientists also found that the quagga was actually the same species as the plains zebra.

It was once thought to be a different animal entirely.

Plains zebras have very unique bodies.

They are medium-sized compared to other zebras. They are larger than the mountain zebra but smaller than the Grévy's zebra. Their stripes are much broader than those other species. No two zebras have the exact same pattern on their skin.

Some zebras even have brown "shadow" stripes on their legs. Foals, or baby zebras, are actually born with brown and white coats. As they grow older, their hair turns darker.

Living in a group is very important for a zebra.

They live in social groups called harems. A harem usually has one male stallion, several females, and their babies.

Stallions work hard to protect their families from predators. Lions and spotted hyenas are their biggest threats.

When a zebra sees danger, it will bark or snort to warn others. They might even stand in a semi-circle to watch for trouble. By staying together, they have a much better chance of staying safe.
