It belongs to a group of big cats called Panthera. This group also includes lions, tigers, and jaguars. Leopards are very good at living in many different places. They can live in rainforests or dry grasslands called steppes. Some even live in mountains or near cities. They are important animals that help keep nature in balance.

A leopard uses its body to hunt and stay safe. Its fur is soft and has dark spots called rosettes.

These patterns act like camouflage to help the cat hide. The spots help it blend into patchy shadows in the trees. This makes it easier to sneak up on prey. Leopards mostly hunt animals like monkeys or other hoofed animals. They are very strong and sometimes drag their food up into trees. This keeps their meal safe from other animals.

People have studied leopards for a very long time. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described the leopard in 1758. Later, Lorenz Oken used the name Panthera in 1816. For a while, people used different names like Felis. In 1902, Joel Asaph Allen named it the type species for Panthera. This means it is the main example of that group. Many naturalists also suggested many different subspecies over the years.

There are eight recognized subspecies of leopards today.

The Amur leopard lives in the Russian Far East and China. The Arabian leopard is the smallest subspecies. It lives on the Arabian Peninsula and is critically endangered. In 2023, only 100 to 120 Arabian leopards were estimated to live in Oman and Yemen. Other leopards live in India, Java, and Sri Lanka. Some populations are very small and face many hard jobs to survive.

Leopards are usually solitary, which means they live alone. They only come together to mate or when a mother raises cubs. A female leopard usually has a litter of 2 to 4 cubs. These cubs are cared for every 15 to 24 months. Both males and females grow up to be adults by age 2 or 2.5. Today, leopards face the hard job of losing their homes. This is called habitat loss and makes their numbers go down. We can learn a lot by watching how these beautiful cats live.
