It is part of the Panthera group of cats. Most lions live in Sub-Saharan Africa today. A small population lives in India. These cats love to live in grasslands and savannahs. They are also found in shrublands. Lions are very important to their homes. They are called apex predators because they are at the top.

Lions live in social groups called prides.

A pride has related females and their cubs. It usually has one or a few adult males. These males are often not related to the females. Female lions usually hunt together as a team. Adult males often fight to stay in the pride.

Lions are usually active during the day. However, they can change to being active at night. They do this if they feel unsafe from people.

Humans have studied lions for a very long time. Carl Linnaeus gave them the scientific name Felis leo in 1758. Later, Lorenz Oken created the name Panthera in 1816. People have shown lions in art for ages. You can see them in old sculptures and paintings. They are even on some national flags.

Lions have been kept in menageries since the Roman Empire. They have been in zoos since the late 1700s.

Lions have many different physical traits.

Males are larger than females. They have a thick mane of hair. This mane grows from the head to the chest. It starts growing when they reach adolescence. Muscles make up 58.8% of a lion's body weight. This is a very high amount for any mammal. They have fast twitch muscle fibers for quick speed. This helps them hunt large animals.

Lions are now a vulnerable species.

This means they are at risk of disappearing. In African countries, populations fell by 43% since the early 1990s. This is a big change in a short time. Habitat loss is one main reason for this. Conflicts with humans are another big concern.

Lions need protected areas to stay safe. Without these areas, their numbers may not be able to stay steady.
