These lions are an endangered subspecies called Panthera leo leo. Today, they live only in the state of Gujarat in India. Most of them stay near the Gir National Park. They are different from the lions we see in Africa. For example, they have a long fold of skin along their belly.

Their fur can be sandy grey or a reddish-brown color. Males have manes, but these are shorter than African manes. Because their manes are shorter, you can often see their ears.

Male lions usually live alone or in small groups of three. Females live in much larger groups called prides. These prides include the mothers and their young cubs. Most of these lions are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They like to live in thick plants or shaded areas near rivers. When they hunt, they look for large animals like chital or sambar. They might also eat wild boar or even crocodiles near the water.

People have been studying these lions for a long time.

In 1826, a scientist named Johann N. Meyer first described them. He used a lion skin from Persia for his work. Other scientists gave them different names in the 1800s. For example, Walter Smee described lions from Gujarat in 1833. Later, in 2017, scientists decided they belong to the same group as Barbary lions. This happened because they found they are very similar in their genes. Even so, some scientists still use the older names for them.

There is a lot of history regarding where these lions lived.

Long ago, they lived in many places like Turkey and Iran. They even lived in parts of Pakistan and Mesopotamia. Now, they are mostly found in the Gir forest area. The number of lions is actually growing quite fast. In 2010, there were only 411 lions left in the wild. By 2017, that number grew to 650 lions. By 2023, there were about 891 lions living in the wild.

Scientists believe lions first left Africa at least 700,000 years ago. They moved through places like the Arabian Peninsula. This journey helped them reach places like India. The Asiatic lion is closely related to lions in North and West Africa. This shows how animals move across huge distances over many years. By protecting the Gir National Park, people help these lions survive. It is amazing to see how a small group can grow again.
