It lives in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. These animals are often grey or dark brown. They have dark spots on their backs. They also have long, ringed tails. They have short legs and small ears. This animal is very important to science. It is the only member of its superfamily, Nandinioidea. This means it is not closely related to other carnivores. It is the most genetically isolated carnivoran.

This animal has a very interesting way of life. It is nocturnal, so it is active at night. Most of the time, it is arboreal. This means it lives high up in trees. It spends much of its time on large branches. It likes to climb among lianas in the tree canopy. The civet eats many kinds of fruit. It eats figs and papayas. It also eats bananas and fruit from the African corkwood tree.

Scientists have studied this animal for a long time. John Edward Gray first described it in 1830. He used the name Viverra binotata at that time. Later, in 1843, Gray gave it the name Nandinia. In 1929, Reginald Innes Pocock proposed the family Nandiniidae. He noticed the animal had a unique ear canal. The shape of its ear is different from other groups. This helped scientists understand its place in nature.

There are many facts about how these civets live. Adult females can reach a certain body length and weight. Adult males are often larger than the females. A female can have a litter of up to four young. She carries them for two to three months. The babies stay with her for about three months. During this time, her milk is an orange-yellow color. This liquid can stain her belly and the babies' fur.

We can see how these animals fit into the world. They live in many places like Guinea and South Sudan. They can be found in rainforests and even savannas. Some civets face hard jobs in the wild today. They lose their homes when forests are cut down. People also hunt them for food. In Nigeria, over 4,300 are hunted each year. In Cameroon, about 3,300 are hunted every year. Protecting their forest homes is very important for them.
