It lives in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. These animals are often grey or dark brown. They have dark spots on their backs. They also have long tails with rings.

Most civets are active at night. They are arboreal, which means they live in trees. They spend a lot of time on large branches. They like to eat fruit. They eat things like bananas, figs, and papayas.

This animal is very special to science. It is the only member of its superfamily, Nandinioidea. This means it is not closely related to other carnivores. It is the most genetically isolated group in its family.

Female civets can have up to four babies. A mother stays with her young for three months. While she cares for them, her milk is orange-yellow. This color can stain her belly and the babies. This may help keep other males away. Some civets face threats from hunting and loss of forest. Many forests are being cut down for farms.
