It lives in woodlands and forests. These animals are mostly nocturnal. This means they sleep during the day. They wake up when the sun sets.

An African civet has a very special look. Its fur has black and white blotches. It also has rings on its tail. These patterns help it hide in the wild. This is called cryptic coloration. It helps the animal blend into its home. The civet has a crest on its back. This is a row of long hairs. If the civet feels scared, it raises this crest. This makes the animal look bigger and more dangerous.

These animals like to be alone. They find food by using smell and sound. They are omnivores. This means they eat both plants and meat. They eat fruit, seeds, and eggs. They also eat small animals like rats and snakes. They can even eat bugs that are toxic. This includes millipedes and termites. They are the largest viverrid in Africa. A viverrid is a type of small carnivore.
