It lives in many places like woodlands, forests, and savannahs. These animals are mostly nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day. They often hide in tall grasses near water for cover. The African civet is a solitary animal that likes to be alone. It is a member of the viverrid family. In fact, it is the largest viverrid in Africa.

This animal has a very special way of staying safe. Its coarse fur has black and white blotches. It also has rings on its long tail. This is called a cryptic pattern. It helps the civet blend into its surroundings. The civet has a dorsal crest on its back. This is a row of long hairs. If the civet feels threatened, it raises this crest. This makes the animal look much larger and more dangerous.

Scientists have studied the African civet for a long time. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber first described it in 1776. Later, in 1915, Reginald Innes Pocock studied its feet. He noticed they were different from other civets. Because of this, he gave them their own genus called Civettictis. This name comes from the French word for civet and the Greek word ictis, which means weasel.

An African civet is an omnivore, so it eats many things. It eats small animals like rats, snakes, and birds. It also eats eggs, insects, and even fruit. Some carnivores cannot eat certain bugs, but the civet can. It can eat toxic millipedes and termites. It uses its sense of smell and hearing to find food. The civet has a very strong bite. This is because it has large muscles in its head.

People have used the African civet for many years. The animal has glands that make a waxy substance. This substance is called civetone. It is used as an ingredient in perfumes. Some people hunt civets to get this substance. This can be a hard job for the animals. In some places, the civet is considered a rare species because of hunting. We can learn a lot by watching how they live in the wild.
