Because they live in so many places, they are not in danger of disappearing.

This animal has a very special way of moving. It has a long body with a wide back. Its skin is remarkably loose. This allows the badger to turn and twist freely inside its own skin. This is very helpful when it needs to fight. The skin around its neck is also quite thick. This helps protect the badger during a struggle.

It has short, sturdy legs with five toes on each foot. Its front feet have very long, strong claws for digging.

People have been studying these animals for a long time. Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber first described a honey badger skin in 1777. He called it Viverra capensis. Later, Gottlieb Conrad Christian Storr gave it the name Mellivora in 1780. The name Mellivora comes from Latin words meaning "honey eater." This is a great name for a creature that likes sweets. Scientists now know it belongs to its own group called Mellivorinae.

There are many different types of honey badgers. These are called subspecies. For example, the Cape ratel lives in South Africa. The Indian ratel is smaller and has paler fur.

Some honey badgers, like the Black ratel, are entirely black. Others, like the White-backed ratel, have a bright creamy white top. These badgers can be quite large. Adult males in Africa can weigh up to 18 kilograms. Some females in Iraq have been found to be quite large too.

Honey badgers are famous for being very fearless. They may even fight much larger animals like lions or hyenas. They have special ways to stay safe. They can release a very strong smell from an anal pouch. This smell can be quite overwhelming to others. They also make rattling noises to show they are angry.

They are also amazing diggers. They can dig tunnels into hard ground in only ten minutes. Most honey badgers like to live alone in their own territory.
