It lives in parts of Europe and West and Central Asia. These animals are known for their stocky bodies and small heads. They have short tails and small black eyes. Their fur is a mix of black, white, brown, and grey.

Some people think the name "badger" comes from the word "badge." This might be because of the white mark on their foreheads. In the UK, they are simply called the "badger."

Badgers live in large underground homes called setts.

These setts are made of many tunnels and different chambers. A single sett can be used by many families for decades. Badgers are very clean animals in their homes. They carry in fresh bedding and move out dirty material. They also use special spots called latrines to go to the bathroom.

These spots are often outside the sett or on the path to other setts.

Badgers are omnivores, which means they eat many different things.

They eat animal foods like earthworms, large insects, and small mammals. They also eat plants like cereals and tubers. Because they eat so many things, they have longer guts than red foxes. Their teeth are also special for this way of life. Their flat molars are great for grinding up food.

Scientists have studied badgers for a very long time.

Carl Linnaeus gave them the scientific name *Meles meles* in 1758. Fossil sites show that the modern badger came from earlier species. These fossils were found in places like Mosbach 2 and Stránská Skála. Badgers have different types called subspecies. For example, the common badger lives in most of Europe. The Norwegian badger has a smaller skull and smaller teeth.

Badgers are most active at night, which is called being nocturnal.

They have a very strong sense of smell to find food. However, their eyesight is monochromatic, so they do not see colors like red. They mainly notice things that are moving. In the spring, a mother can have a litter of up to five cubs. These young cubs usually stay with their family group even after they grow up.

They are powerful diggers with long, strong claws.
