Because it lives in so many places, it has many names. People call it the common viper or the crossed viper. In Poland, people call it the zigzag viper. This is because of the pattern on its back.

This snake has a very interesting way it works. Most vipers are ovoviviparous, which means they give birth to live young. Females breed once every two or three years. They give birth to litters in late summer or early autumn. These litters can have between three and 20 babies. The young snakes stay with their mothers for a few days.

The adder also uses its environment to survive. It needs different kinds of land to do its daily tasks. It needs places to bask in the sun. It also needs places to hide from predators. It needs special spots for hibernation during the cold months.

People have known about this snake for a long time. The name "adder" comes from an Old English word. That word meant snake in many older languages. In the 14th century, the name changed into "an adder."

Scientists have studied these snakes to learn their history. One scientist, Linnaeus, described the first subspecies in 1758. Other researchers like Boettger described a new subspecies in 1889. Zarevskij described another one in 1917. These names help us understand the different types of adders.

There are many facts about how an adder looks.

Adults usually grow to about 50 to 60 centimeters long. Some very large snakes in Scandinavia reach over 70 centimeters. The weight of an adder can range from 100 to 500 grams. Some snakes are melanistic, which means they are completely black. Most adders have a dark V or X shape on their heads.

In Great Britain, it is illegal to harm or sell them. This is part of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. In Switzerland, the common viper is considered endangered. This means there are not many of them left. They face hard jobs like losing their homes to farms. They are also sometimes taken for the pet trade. We can learn from them to help keep nature healthy.
