It is a non-venomous snake that lives in parts of Europe and Africa. You might see them near fresh water like ponds or rivers. These snakes are often dark green or brown in color. They have a bright yellow or white collar behind their heads. This special mark is why some people call them ringed snakes.

In colder areas, these snakes are often darker in color. This helps them soak up more heat from the sun.

Grass snakes have a very specific way they find food. They are strong swimmers that like to hunt near water edges. They use their sight and a sense of smell to find prey. They mostly eat amphibians like common frogs and common toads.

When they find a meal, they swallow it whole. They do not use constriction, which is when a snake squeezes its prey. After a big meal, the snake might stay in one spot. It will bask in the sun to help digest its food. This can take a long time because the prey is often large.

Scientists have studied these snakes for a very long time. We have found fossils of grass snakes from the Early Pleistocene era. These old bones were found at a site called Somssich Hill 2 in Hungary.

People have also written about them in ancient books. A writer named Virgil described them in his work called Georgics in 29 BC. He said they lived in marshes and ate frogs and fish. These records show that people have noticed these snakes for thousands of years.

There are many different types and facts about these snakes. The grass snake can grow to be quite long. They lay batches of 8 to 40 leathery eggs between June and July. These eggs need warmth and moisture to hatch after about 10 weeks.

Some subspecies are very rare and are called critically endangered. For example, the Sardinian grass snake is in danger of disappearing. In Denmark, all five species of reptiles have been protected since 1981.

Grass snakes are even part of famous old stories. In Baltic mythology, they are seen as sacred animals.

People in Lithuania and Latvia sometimes kept them as pets near their homes. They believed that a snake living under a house kept it safe. Some legends say that grass snakes even wear golden crowns. These stories show how much people have wondered about these animals. Today, many people still see them as symbols of wisdom and luck.
