These snakes live in North and Central America. They range from central Canada all the way down to Costa Rica. Most garter snakes have slender bodies and large round eyes. Their scales often look raised, which is called being keeled. Many have stripes of blue, yellow, or red on black bodies.

They are very important animals in their habitats.

These snakes have a very interesting way of staying safe. If a predator finds them, they might coil and strike. Often, they just hide their heads and flail their tails. They also have a gland near their tail that releases a smelly scent. This musky smell can help them escape from danger.

Garter snakes also use their tongues to find others. They flick their tongues to pick up chemical scents called pheromones. They use a special tool called a vomeronasal organ to process these smells. This helps them find mates or other snakes in their area.

Scientists have studied these snakes for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the eastern garter snake in 1758. Later, in 1843, Leopold Fitzinger named the Thamnophis genus.

Today, experts still debate how to group all the different types. Some snakes might be separate species, while others are just subspecies. The Reptile Database currently recognizes 37 different species.

There are many facts about how garter snakes live. They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They eat slugs, worms, lizards, and even small fish.

Some species, like the ribbon snake, love eating frogs. Garter snakes are also unique because they can be both venomous and poisonous. They produce a mild neurotoxic venom from their Duvernoy's gland. If they eat toxic newts, they can store those toxins in their liver.

This makes the snake poisonous to anything that tries to eat it.

You can find garter snakes in many different places. They live in forests, grasslands, and even backyard lawns.

Most of them stay close to water like ponds or streams. This is because they love to eat animals that live in the water. They also like to bask in the sun to stay warm. This is because they are heterothermic reptiles.
