It is often green or brown. It has a yellow or white collar behind its head. This makes it look like it is wearing a ring. Some snakes are darker in cold places. This helps them soak up heat from the sun.

These snakes love to swim in fresh water. They hunt near the edges of ponds. They use their eyes and smell to find food. They mostly eat frogs and toads.

They swallow their prey whole. They do not squeeze it first.

As the snake grows, it must shed its skin. This is called ecdysis. New skin grows under the old skin. The eyes may look blue or milky during this time. The snake cannot see well then. It will not hunt until the old skin falls off. To stay safe, grass snakes can act dead. They can also make a fluid that smells like garlic. This helps scare away animals that might eat them.
