It is a member of the mustelid family. This family includes animals like weasels and minks. Most polecats have dark brown fur and a light belly. A dark mask also covers their faces. Sometimes, they have different colors like white or red.

These animals live across Europe and the Rif mountains. They are very successful in the wild today. The IUCN Red List calls them a "Least Concern" species. This means there are many of them living in large numbers.

Life for a polecat involves hunting and marking territory. They eat small rodents, birds, and reptiles. A polecat has a very strong skull and large teeth. It can use these teeth to pierce the brain of its prey. Sometimes, it carries its food back to a burrow. It may even keep the prey alive to eat it later.

To protect its home, the polecat uses a special trick. It can release a liquid that has a very bad smell. This helps them mark their space for other animals. Unlike many other mustelids, they are not very territorial. Animals of the same sex often share the same home range.

History shows a deep link between polecats and humans.

Scientists believe the European polecat is the sole ancestor of the ferret. Humans began domesticating ferrets more than 2,000 years ago. They used these pets to help hunt vermin. In the past, people often viewed the polecat in a negative way. In Britain, gamekeepers used to hunt them. In old English books, the name was even linked to bad behavior. The word "polecat" first appeared after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

There are many different types, or subspecies, of polecats.

The common polecat lives in Central and Western Europe. There is also a Welsh polecat found in England and Wales. In Scotland, you might find the Scottish polecat. The domestic ferret is actually a subspecies called *Mustela putorius furo*. These ferrets are often found all over the world near people.

The Mediterranean polecat is a smaller type with yellowish fur. These different groups help the species live in many places.

Learning about the polecat helps us understand other animals.

For example, the name "fisher" in North America comes from the word "fitch." This word was used to describe polecat skins. You can see how close the polecat is to the ferret by looking at them. A dark ferret looks almost exactly like a wild polecat. However, the ferret has a smaller brain and a smaller skull. Even though they look similar, the wild polecat is built for life in the forest.
