This animal is known for a strong smell. It lets out a foul liquid to mark its home. The polecat has a compact body. It also has a very strong skull and teeth. This helps it eat small rodents, birds, and reptiles. Sometimes, it pierces its prey with its teeth. It may even keep its food alive in a burrow for later.

People have lived near polecats for a long time.

The polecat is the ancestor of the ferret. Humans domesticated ferrets over 2,000 years ago. They used them to hunt vermin. Today, the polecat is a "Least Concern" species. This means there are many of them in the wild.
