Marten

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A marten is a slender animal. It looks like a weasel. It has a bushy tail and large paws. Its claws can pull in halfway. This helps them move well. Martens live in northern forests. These woods have many needle trees.

Martens like to live alone. They only meet to breed in late spring. Mothers give birth to up to five kits. These babies are born blind and have almost no hair. The kits stay with their mother for a few months. Then they must live on their own.

These animals eat many kinds of food. This means they are omnivorous. Some martens live in the same area. They stay apart by eating different things. For example, one kind likes berries. Another kind eats meat. This helps them live together without fighting.

People have valued marten fur for a long time. In Canada, people once made mittens from the fur. In Croatia, the fur was used like money. A marten was even shown on old coins. The marten is still on some coins today.
