Marten

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A marten is a slender and agile mammal. It belongs to the family Mustelidae. This family includes animals like weasels. Martens have bushy tails and large paws. Their claws are partially retractile, which means they can pull them in. Their fur can be dark brown or yellowish. These animals live in the taiga. This is a type of forest with many needle trees. They also live in northern forests with deciduous trees.

Most martens live a solitary life. They only meet to breed in late spring or early summer. A mother can have a litter of up to five kits. These babies are born blind and have almost no hair. The kits stay with their mother for about two months to be weaned. By three or four months of age, they leave to live alone. Martens are omnivorous. This means they eat many different kinds of food.

Scientists have studied the history of these animals. The genus Martes first evolved about seven million years ago. This happened during the Miocene epoch. There are many fossil species that have been described. These include Martes campestris and Martes wenzensis from the Pliocene. There is also Martes vetus from the Pleistocene. One fossil named Martes nobilis is now seen as the same as the American marten.

Different types of martens live in different ways. This is called spatial niche segregation. For example, the stone marten and pine marten live apart in the same areas. They do this by choosing different foods or habitats. In Belarus, pine martens like woodlands with clay-rich soil. Stone martens live in places with sandy soils. They might eat berries or carrion to survive there. In Ireland and Italy, pine martens stay in places with many resources.

Humans have used the marten in many ways. In Canada, the Hudson Bay Company used marten pelts for mittens. In Croatia, the fur was once used to pay taxes. A coin called a banovac was used between 1235 and 1384. It had a marten on it. This is why the Croatian word for marten is kuna. Even today, the marten is on Croatian coins. The name Nokia comes from a type of marten.
