It is the largest land member of the Mustelidae family. This group includes animals like weasels and martens. The wolverine is a solitary carnivore. This means it usually lives and hunts alone. It has a reputation for being very fierce. Even though it is small, it can kill prey much larger than itself.

To survive in the cold, the wolverine has special tools. It has thick, dark, and oily fur. This fur is hydrophobic, which means it resists water. This helps the animal stay dry in the snow. It has large, five-toed paws with sharp, crampon-like claws. These claws help it climb steep cliffs and snowy peaks.

The wolverine also has a unique tooth. One upper molar is rotated 90 degrees toward the inside of its mouth. This helps the animal tear meat that is frozen solid.

Many names for the wolverine suggest it is a glutton. Its scientific name, Gulo, actually means "glutton." In Finnish, the name is ahma, which also means glutton. In French-speaking Canada, it is called carcajou.

This name comes from the Innu-aimun word kuàkuàtsheu. The English name wolverine might mean "a little wolf." Some people call it a "skunk bear" because of its strong scent. It uses scent glands to mark its territory.

Most wolverines live in the cold Northern Hemisphere. You can find them in northern Canada and Alaska. They also live in the Nordic countries of Europe and through Siberia.

Their population has gone down since the 1800s. This happened because of trapping and lost habitats. They are now mostly gone from the southern parts of their range. In the U.S., they are found in the North Cascades and the Rocky Mountains. A female and her two babies were seen at Mount Rainier in 2020.

Learning about wolverines helps us understand how animals adapt to hard places. They are often scavengers that eat carrion. This is meat left behind by other predators like wolves.

By following wolf trails, they can find food in the winter. This feeding style helps them survive when food is hard to find. Their bodies are built for the toughest environments on Earth. They show us how strength and special tools help life continue in the snow.
