This group includes many animals like weasels, badgers, and otters. It also includes wolverines, martens, and polecats. There are about 66 to 70 different species in this family. They vary greatly in size and how they act. The least weasel is very small and short. In contrast, the giant otter in South America can be very long.

Some, like the sea otter, are very heavy.

Most mustelids share certain body shapes. They usually have long, slender bodies and short legs. Their skulls and round ears are often quite small. They also have very thick fur to stay warm. This fur can act as camouflage to hide them. Many mustelids live alone and are active at night. They use scent glands to mark their territory. These glands produce a strong smell that other animals can detect.

These animals live in many different ways. Some are arboreal, which means they live in trees. Others are fossorial, meaning they dig tunnels in the ground. European badgers dig large tunnel networks called setts. Some mustelids live in the water. The sea otter is fully aquatic. It is one of the few mammals that uses tools. It uses stones as anvils to crack open shellfish.

Mustelids have a very old history. Different types of mustelid-like animals appeared about 40 million years ago. Their common ancestor appeared about 18 million years ago. They moved to almost every continent except Antarctica and Australia. They reached the Americas by crossing a land bridge. Humans have used mustelids for a long time. People hunted them for their beautiful fur. This fur trade was very important for many nations in Europe. It even helped drive people to explore new lands like Siberia.

Today, we see mustelids in our daily lives in different ways. The ferret is the only mustelid that people keep as a pet. Some people also keep tayras as pets or working animals. We must also learn how to protect them. Some species, like the sea otter, are vulnerable to oil spills. The black-footed ferret needs prairie dogs to survive. The rare European mink is also in danger. By learning about them, we can help keep these amazing animals safe.
