There are 14 known species of otters in the world today. Some of these species live in fresh water like rivers. Other species live in the salty water of the ocean.

They belong to a group of animals called Lutrinae. This group is part of the Mustelidae family. This family also includes animals like weasels, badgers, and mink.

Otters have bodies built perfectly for a life in the water. They have long, slim bodies and relatively short limbs.

Their most helpful tools are their powerful webbed feet. These feet help them swim very well through the water. They also have very thick and soft fur. This fur has a layer of underfur underneath long guard hairs. This layer traps air to keep the otter warm and dry. The air also helps them float easily on the surface.

Learning how to eat is a big part of an otter's life. Most otters eat fish as their main food. They might also eat frogs, birds, or even crabs.

Sea otters are very special because they eat shellfish. They use stones to crack open shells on their bellies. This is a skill that young otters must learn from their families. Some otters must eat a lot to stay warm. For example, Eurasian otters eat 15% of their body weight every day. Sea otters may need to eat up to 25% of their weight.

A group of otters can be called a bevy, a family, or a romp. When they are floating together in the water, they are called a raft. They often live in a den called a holt or a couch. These dens are often built under tree roots or rocks. They line them with soft moss and grass to stay cozy.

Humans and otters have shared stories for a very long time. In Norse mythology, a dwarf could take the form of an otter.

In Japanese folklore, otters called "kawauso" are said to be shapeshifters. They might even change into beautiful people to trick humans. In some Native American cultures, the otter is a special totem animal. People in Bangladesh have even used smooth-coated otters to help fish. These animals have been part of human culture and stories for many centuries.
