The European mink is a small, fast animal that lives near water.

Mustela lutreola

This species is known as a semiaquatic mammal. This means it spends much of its time both on land and in water. They are mostly found near forest streams that do not freeze during the winter. These minks are very agile swimmers. They can dive and stay underwater for one to two minutes. To move through the water, they paddle with both their front and back limbs at the same time.

This animal has a long body and very short legs. Its fur is a very important tool for staying warm. In the winter, the fur is thick, dense, and silky. The underfur is especially dense to help it survive in cold water. The guard hairs are coarse and shiny. These hairs are flat in the middle, which is a special way to help aquatic animals.

Most minks are dark brown or almost blackish-brown. Some may even have a dark belt on their backs. A key way to tell them apart from American minks is their face. The European mink has white markings on its upper lip.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named the nominate subspecies in 1758. Since then, researchers have found seven different subspecies. Some live in France, while others live in Russia or the Caucasus. Fossil finds of these minks are very rare. This makes it hard to know exactly when they first appeared. Some fossils found in European caves suggest they may have lived alongside early humans.

There are many important facts about how they live. A typical litter has between three and seven kits. At birth, these kits are blind and weigh about 25 grams. They grow very fast and triple their weight in just ten days. An adult male can be 40 to 50 centimeters long. They eat many things like voles, frogs, and fish. They even catch fish that weigh as much as 150 grams.

Today, the European mink faces many hard jobs. They are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. This means their numbers are dropping very quickly. In the last 150 years, their population has shrunk by more than 90%. One reason is competition with the American mink. The American mink also spreads diseases to them. Other problems include habitat destruction and changes in the climate.
