It lives in thick forests across Russia, Siberia, and parts of Mongolia. These animals prefer woods filled with spruce, pine, and birch trees. They are very skilled at climbing both tall trees and steep cliffs. Most sables live in burrows near riverbanks or among thick tree roots.

They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. In the summer, they hunt small mammals like mountain hares. During the winter, they eat berries, rodents, and even small deer. They use their sharp hearing and sense of smell to find food. They can even catch fish using their front paws.

Sables have very special fur that ranges from light to dark brown.

Their winter coats are much longer and thicker than their summer ones. This fur is unique because it stays smooth even if you stroke it the wrong way. A sable might have a light patch of fur on its throat. Some sables, like those in Japan, have black markings on their feet. Males are usually larger than females. A male's body can reach 48 centimeters long with a 25 centimeter tail. They weigh about 1.5 kilograms.

The name "sable" likely comes from Slavic languages. It moved into Western Europe through the old fur trade. In the past, many kings and nobles wanted sable for their clothes. For example, King Henry VIII of England loved sable. He even made a rule that only high-ranking nobles could wear it. In Russia, the hunt for sables helped drive the conquest of Siberia. One famous leader, Ivan Grozny, once asked for 30,000 sable skins every year.

Sables have interesting ways of living and having babies. Mating usually happens between June and August. During this time, males might dig shallow grooves in the snow.

When a female is ready, the mating can last up to eight hours. The mother builds a nest in a tree hollow using moss and grass. She typically has a litter of two or three babies. The babies are born with their eyes closed and very little hair. They open their eyes after about 30 to 36 days. In the wild, these animals can live for up to eighteen years.

Today, sables are part of a careful balance in nature. They are listed as "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List. This means they are not currently at high risk of disappearing. In Russia, people worked hard to help them by moving 19,000 animals back into the wild. This happened between 1940 and 1965 to grow their numbers. Sables can also mix with pine martens to create a hybrid called a kidus. Most kiduses cannot have babies of their own. You can still see the beauty of sable fur in decorated clothing today.
