The Pallas's cat is a small wild cat with a very special look.

Some people call it the manul. It has long and dense light grey fur. This fur often has yellowish or reddish colors in it. The cat has a stocky body and a long bushy tail. It is about the same size as a pet cat. Because its fur is so thick, it looks very stout and plush.

This thick coat helps it survive in very cold places.

This cat has a clever way of staying hidden. Its ears are rounded and set low on the sides of its head. This allows the cat to peer over rocks or objects. It can watch things without showing its ears above the line. This can make the cat look fierce or upset. The fur also acts as camouflage in the wild. In the winter, the fur becomes greyer and even denser. This helps the cat blend into the rocky and snowy landscape.

People have studied this cat for a long time. Peter Simon Pallas first described the cat in 1776. He saw one near Lake Baikal by the Dzhida River. Later, William Thomas Blanford gave it the name Pallas's cat. This was to honor the work of Peter Simon Pallas. Other scientists also studied different types of these cats. For example, Brian Houghton Hodgson described specimens from Tibet in 1842. These discoveries helped us understand where these cats live.

These cats live in many parts of Central Asia.

They can be found from the Caucasus to the Mongolian plains. They like rocky grasslands and shrublands. They often live where there is not much snow. In the mountains, they find shelter in rock crevices or burrows. They hunt for small animals like rodents and lagomorphs. A female cat usually has between two and six kittens in the spring.

Scientists say they are a "Least Concern" species since 2020.

Even though they are wild, people have connected with them in many ways. Zoos have kept Pallas's cats since the early 1950s. Today, 60 zoos help with breeding programs. These zoos are in Europe, Russia, North America, and Japan. This helps make sure the cats stay healthy. You might also see them in photos from high places. For instance, one was found in the Nepal Himalayas in 2012. They are truly amazing animals of the high mountains.
