Lesser florican

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The lesser florican is a very special bird.

It is the smallest bird in the bustard family. This bird lives in the tall grasslands of the Indian Subcontinent. You might hear it called the likh or the kharmore. In some areas, people call it the "grass peacock." This is because of how it holds its tail feathers while walking. It is a rare bird that is now highly endangered.

This means there are very few left in the wild today.

During the breeding season, the males perform a wonderful display. They leap suddenly out of the tall grass. As they jump, they make a croaking or knocking sound. They flutter their wings and then fall back down. At the top of the leap, they arch their necks back. They even fold their legs as if they were sitting.

These jumps happen every few minutes in the early morning or late evening. Males like to pick flat spots with low grass for these displays.

People have studied this bird for a long time. In 1782, an illustrator named John Frederick Miller drew a female bird. He gave the bird the name *Otis indica*. Later, in 1839, a French naturalist named René Lesson created the genus *Sypheotides*. This is the group the bird belongs to today. Scientists used to think the males and females were different species. Now they know they are the same kind of bird. They also know the males and females are different sizes.

These birds live in many different places. They breed in parts of India like Gujarat and Rajasthan. They also live in parts of Madhya Pradesh and southern Nepal.

In the winter, they move to different areas across India. They often move based on when the rain falls. In Gujarat, scientists ringed 500 males to study them. They found that most birds stay near the place where they were caught. Sadly, the birds have disappeared from places like Pakistan.

Lesser floricans eat many different things to stay healthy. They eat small animals like worms, centipedes, and lizards. They also eat frogs and many kinds of insects. They like to eat locusts, flying ants, and hairy caterpillars.

When they are not eating animals, they eat plants. They enjoy eating seeds, herbs, and berries. Most birds eat in the early morning or evening. This is similar to how many other animals hunt when it is cool. They find food in thick grass or even in farm fields.
