life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The lesser florican is a small bird.

It lives in the tall grasslands of the Indian Subcontinent. This bird is part of the bustard family. It is the smallest member of that family.

In the summer, males show off with a special display. They leap high out of the grass. During the jump, they make a croaking sound. They arch their necks back and flutter their wings.

Males have black and white feathers for breeding. They also have long feathers on their heads. These feathers curve back behind their necks.

Females are a little bit larger than males. Both males and females look different when they are not breeding. They look buff with black streaks. These birds eat many things. They eat worms, lizards, and frogs. They also eat insects like ants and caterpillars.
