They mostly live in dry grasslands and steppe regions. A steppe is a large area of flat, dry land. There are 26 known species of bustards. Some are called floricans or korhaans.

These birds eat many things. They are omnivorous, which means they eat both plants and animals. They eat seeds, fruit, and leaves. They also eat small bugs and tiny animals.

Most bustards prefer to walk or run. They have strong legs and big toes to help them move.

Bustards come in many sizes. The kori bustard and the great bustard are very big. They are the heaviest birds that can fly. In most species, the males are much larger than the females. This is called sexual dimorphism. This means the males and females look very different.

Female bustards lay three to five dark, speckled eggs. They make a nest in a small scrape on the ground. The mother sits on the eggs alone to keep them warm. Many bustards are hard to find because they are very shy.
