Courser

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Coursers are special birds. They live in hot, dry deserts.

These birds have long legs. They also have short wings. Their bills are long and pointed. The bills curve down at the end. Coursers hunt for insects. They do this by running fast.

To stay safe, they hide. They have cryptic plumage. This means their feathers help them blend in. If a predator comes, they crouch low. This helps them stay out of sight. They lay two or three eggs. The eggs stay on the ground. There are nine kinds of coursers. Some live in the Old World. These birds are part of the family Glareolidae. People once thought they were waders. Waders are birds like plovers. Now, science shows they are different. They are more like gulls and terns. They are most like the crab-plover.

This bird family lives in warm places.
