Some people call them thick-knees. This name comes from their long legs. They have large joints on their legs. These joints look thick. These birds have large yellow eyes. This gives them a look like a reptile. Their feathers help them hide in the dirt. This is called cryptic plumage.

Most stone-curlews like dry places. They live in many parts of the world. They live in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Many of these birds stay in one place. But the Eurasian stone-curlew is a migrant. A migrant is a bird that moves for the season. It flies to Africa for the winter.

These birds are mostly nocturnal. This means they are active at night. They sing loud, wailing songs in the dark. They eat insects and other small bugs. Larger birds might eat lizards. They might even eat small mammals.

Even though they have a similar name, they are not true curlews. True curlews belong to a different bird family.
