Curlews are a group of nine bird species.

They have brown feathers with a mottled pattern. This means their feathers have spots. Curlews are known for their long, thin bills. These bills curve downward. The name Numenius comes from a Greek word. It may refer to the moon because of the bill shape.

These birds are waders. Waders are birds that walk in shallow water. Curlews use their long bills to find food. They probe in soft mud or ground. They look for worms and other small creatures. They also eat crabs.

Curlews live all over the world. Many species migrate. This means they fly to new places each year. You can find them in Europe, Africa, and North America. You can also find them in Asia and South America.

Some curlews face problems. In Ireland, the Eurasian curlew population is very small. People worry they might become extinct. This means they could disappear forever. Changes in farming have changed where they live. For example, draining marshes for farms hurts them.
