Shorebirds are a big group of birds. There are about 390 species in this group. They live in every part of the world. Most of them live near water. They eat small animals like bugs. Some live in dry deserts. Other birds live in thick forests.

These birds have different ways of living. Some are called waders. They poke in the mud for food. Some are gulls. They are often larger and eat fish from the sea. There are also auks. These birds live on sea cliffs. They can fly under the water to catch fish.

Shorebirds are very old. Fossils show they lived during the time of dinosaurs. They are one of the few modern bird groups with such an old record. Some fossils were even found in Antarctica.

Shorebirds also have many ways of caring for their babies. Some mothers care for the eggs. In other groups, the fathers do the work. Scientists are still studying why they have so many different ways of raising their young.
