There are 118 different species in this group. Most live in warm, tropical places. You can find them in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Some live in Europe or the Americas too.

Most kingfishers have large heads and long, sharp bills. These bills look like daggers. Many birds have bright blue or green feathers. The color does not come from paint-like pigments. Instead, the shape of the feathers scatters blue light. This is called the Tyndall effect.

These birds are great hunters. They sit on a perch and watch for food. Then they swoop down to grab it. Many eat fish, but others eat bugs or frogs. Some use their bills to beat prey against a branch. This helps them break bones or spines.

Kingfishers build homes in holes. They often dig tunnels in river banks. Some forest birds nest in termite nests. Both parents help dig the tunnels and care for the white eggs.
