These birds have bright feathers. Many are green, but some are rose-colored. They have long, curved bills. They use these bills like forceps to snatch insects from the air.

As their name says, they mostly eat flying insects. They especially like bees and wasps. To stay safe, the bird hits the insect on a hard surface. This rubs the stinger off. The pressure also lets out the venom.

Many bee-eaters are gregarious. This means they live in large groups called colonies. They make homes by digging tunnels into sandy banks. These banks are often near rivers.

Most species are monogamous. This means they have one mate. Both parents help care for the white eggs. They often have five eggs in a clutch. Other birds in the colony may help too.
