Most motmots have long tails. Some tails look like a racket. This happens because parts of the feathers fall off. The tiny bits fall off when the bird cleans itself. This is called preening. It does not happen because the bird pulls them out.

These birds eat fruit and small bugs. They also eat lizards. Some eat poison dart frogs. Motmots nest in tunnels in dirt banks. They lay about four white eggs. Both parents help care for the young. The eggs hatch after 20 days. The babies leave the nest after 30 days.

Motmots often wag their tails. They do this when they see a predator. A predator is an animal that hunts others. This wagging tells the hunter that the bird is watching. It helps the bird save power. It also helps the hunter. The hunter will not waste time on a chase.
