Jacamars are elegant birds from warm forests. They live in Central and South America. Some even live in Mexico. These birds like to stay in the forest canopy. The canopy is the top layer of the woods.

Jacamars are small to medium birds. They have long tails and long bills. Their feathers can be very bright and shiny. This shine is called iridescence. Some males have a white patch on their breast. They have special feet called zygodactyl feet. This means they have two toes pointing forward. They also have two toes pointing backward.

Most jacamars eat insects. They hunt by sitting on a perch. Then they fly out to catch bugs in the air. Many jacamars like to eat moths and butterflies. The great jacamar is a little different. It eats spiders and small lizards too.

These birds nest in holes. Some make holes in the soil. Others use termite mounds in trees. Both parents help keep the eggs warm. The eggs hatch in about 19 to 26 days. The chicks are born with soft down feathers.
