Jacanas are birds that live in warm places.

They like to stay near shallow lakes. These birds have very long toes and nails. The long toes spread out the bird's weight. This helps them walk on floating plants.

In this group, the females are larger than the males. Most species are polyandrous. This means one female may have many mates. The males do most of the work for the family. They build flimsy nests on floating weeds. The males sit on the eggs to keep them warm. They use their wings to brood the eggs. Brooding means holding the eggs against the warm body. Some males even carry chicks under their wings.

Jacanas eat many things. They mostly eat bugs and small animals. They also eat plant seeds. Some birds even pick ticks off large animals. Most jacanas have rounded wings and short tails. Their flight is often slow and weak. One type, the pheasant-tailed jacana, travels long distances. It migrates from the north to India and Asia.
