Living things have special traits. They use metabolism to turn food into power. They use homeostasis to stay steady inside. For example, you sweat to stay cool. Living things also grow and make copies of themselves. This is called reproduction.

All life is made of tiny parts called cells. These are the basic units of life.

Inside cells, there are special molecules. Proteins act like tiny machines. They do many jobs to keep the cell working. There are also nucleic acids. These include DNA and RNA. They carry instructions for the species.

Life started at least 3.5 billion years ago. It grew from one common ancestor. This led to all the plants and animals today.
