These birds come in many sizes. The least sandpiper is very small. The Far Eastern curlew is much larger.

Most have long bodies and thin wings. Their bills can be straight or curved.

Sandpipers use their bills to find food. They have many tactile receptors in the bill tips. These are tiny parts that sense touch. This helps them feel prey in the mud. They also use rhynchokinesis to eat. This is a way to bend the upper jaw. It helps them grab food with less force.

Most sandpipers have dull colors like brown or grey. This helps them hide. They make simple nests in the ground. A nest is just a small scrape in the dirt. They lay three or four eggs. The young birds are precocial. This means they can move on their own very soon.
