life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A snipe is a type of wading bird. There are about 26 kinds of snipes. They have very long, thin bills. Their eyes sit high on their heads. Their feathers have colors that help them hide. This is called camouflage.

Snipes live in wet places. They like bogs, swamps, and ponds. They also live near rivers and coasts. They stay in thick plants to hide from danger.

Finding food is a special way for a snipe. It moves its long bill up and down in the mud. This looks like a sewing machine. The tip of the bill is very sensitive. It has tiny parts called filaments. These help the bird feel food in the mud. The bird does not need to see its food. It eats insect larvae, worms, and snails. It can even slurp up small creatures.

Snipes are hard to catch. They fly in a shaky, uneven way. This is called an erratic flight pattern. Long ago, people used the word "sniper" for skilled hunters. This word came from how hard it was to hunt these birds.
