Snipe

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A snipe is a special type of wading bird. There are about 26 different species in the family Scolopacidae. These birds have very long and slender bills. Their eyes sit high on their heads. They also have plumage, or feathers, that provide camouflage. This helps them hide in their homes.

Finding food is a very interesting thing that happens. A snipe searches for food in the mud. It moves its long bill up and down. This looks like a sewing-machine action. The tip of the bill is very sensitive. Tiny filaments, or thin threads, run near the tip. These filaments help the bird feel food without seeing it.

Scientists group these birds into different sets called genera. The genus Gallinago is found almost everywhere in the world. The genus Lymnocryptes lives in Asia and Europe. These birds are closely related to woodcocks. The genus Coenocorypha is only on islands in New Zealand. Painted-snipes are different from these birds. They belong to their own family called Rostratulidae.

Snipes live in many wet, marshy places. They like bogs, swamps, and wet meadows. They also live near rivers, ponds, and coast lines. They stay in thick plants to hide from predators. They eat many small things like insect larvae. They also eat worms, snails, and crustaceans. The bird can slurp up prey while its bill stays closed.

These birds are very hard to catch. They have an erratic flight pattern. This means they fly in a shaky, uneven way. This made hunting them a hard job. The word "sniper" actually comes from this. It once meant a hunter who was very skilled. Now, it means a person who shoots from a hidden place.
