Egrets are often white or have very pretty feathers. Bitterns are a specific group within the heron family. Most herons live near water like lakes, rivers, or the sea.

They are meat eaters that hunt for many different things. This includes fish, reptiles, frogs, and even small insects.

Herons have a very special way of hunting for food.

Many herons like to sit very still in shallow water. They wait patiently for a snack to swim by. Some herons even use their wings to help them hunt. The black heron holds its wings up like a little umbrella.

This creates shade so the bird can see better in the water. Other herons might walk slowly to find prey. Some even use bait, like bread or seeds, to lure fish closer.

Herons have a unique way of flying through the sky.

Most long-necked birds stretch their necks out when they fly. Herons do the opposite by pulling their necks in. They fold their necks into a tight S-shape. This works because of the way their neck bones are shaped. They have 20 or 21 of these special bones. While they fly, they also hold their long legs straight back.

People have been writing about herons for a very long time.

The word "heron" first appeared in English around the year 1300. It came from old words in the French language. In the past, people even had funny names for them. One name was "shitepoke," which came from their habit of cleaning themselves. Another name was "shiterow," which was used in Scotland. Even famous writers like Shakespeare used names for these birds in his plays.

There are many different sizes of herons in the world.

The goliath heron is the largest of all the species. On the other side, the dwarf bittern is very small. Herons live on almost every continent on Earth. You can find them everywhere except for Antarctica and very cold places.

Most herons like warm, tropical areas. Some birds, like the cattle egret, even follow large animals to find food. They catch insects that jump up when the animals move.
