These birds live in many places like wetlands, forests, and plains. You might find them in marshes, ponds, or near rivers. Some types, like the Andean ibis, live in high grasslands in South America. Other species, like the olive ibis, prefer dense forests.

These birds have a very special way of finding food. They have long bills that curve downward. They use these bills to probe through mud for food. They usually look for small things called crustaceans.

Many ibises like to feed together in large groups. When it is time to nest, they become very territorial. This means they work hard to protect their nesting space. Most ibises build their nests high up in trees. They often share these trees with birds like herons or spoonbills.

People have studied these birds for a very long time. The name "ibis" comes from Latin and Ancient Greek words. The word actually comes from an old Egyptian word, "hb."

In 1757, someone mistakenly used the name for a different bird called the western cattle egret. Scientists have found many different kinds of ibises over the years. There are 29 living species of ibis today. There are also six species of spoonbills in the same family. Some ibises from the past could not fly at all. One lived in the Hawaiian Islands and was called Apteribis. Another lived in Jamaica and was called Xenicibis.

There are many interesting facts about where they live. The Llanos grasslands in Venezuela have the most ibis types. Seven different species share the marshes there. In India, three species live together by using different parts of the land. The Black-headed ibis stays in shallow water. The Red-naped ibis stays in higher areas to avoid competition.

Ibises are also very important in human stories and art. In ancient Egypt, the sacred ibis was a holy bird. It was linked to the god Thoth. Thoth was the god of writing, math, and the moon.

Archaeologists even found one and a half million ibis mummies in Saqqara. In America, the University of Miami uses the American white ibis as a mascot. They chose it because of a legend about its bravery. The legend says the ibis is the last animal to hide from a hurricane. It is also the first bird to appear after the storm.
