These eels have very long, thin jaws. The jaws split apart at the tips. The top jaw curves up. They look like the beak of a snipe bird. This shape helps them hunt. Scientists found shrimp-like creatures in their stomachs. They may also eat small fish.

Baby eels look very different. They are called leptocephali, which means "small head." These babies are clear and flat. They look like small leaves. They live near the top of the ocean. After a few months, they undergo metamorphosis. This is a way to change into an adult. They swim down to the deep water to grow up.
