Dowitcher

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The dowitcher is a medium-sized bird. It has a long bill.

These birds are wading birds. They live in wet areas. There are three types of dowitchers. Two of them live in North America. The third lives in Asia. The Asian bird is rare.

All three birds fly very far. This is called migration. They travel to new places each year. Dowitchers look like godwits. They have red bellies in summer. But dowitchers have short legs. They are more like snipes. They are closely related to snipes.

A man named Prince Maximilian named them. He used the name Limnodromus. This name comes from Greek words. It means racers of the marsh. This is because they live in marshes. They run through the wet ground. Scientists once thought they were one kind. Now we know they are different. It can be hard to tell them apart.
