Rynchops

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Skimmers are very special birds. They belong to the genus Rynchops. This name comes from Greek words for beak and face.

These birds have a very odd look. Their bottom beak is longer than the top one. This helps them catch food in a unique way. They fly low and fast over water. Their bottom beak slices the surface. It snaps shut on small fish.

Skimmers are the only birds with slit-shaped pupils. These are the dark parts of the eye. Their bills also fall within their binocular vision. This means they can see their beak clearly. This helps them catch prey.

Most skimmers are black and white. The bottom half of their beak is crimson. Crimson is a bright red color. They live in warm, tropical places. They lay three to six eggs on sandy beaches. The female sits on the eggs to keep them warm.

Skimmers often gather in large flocks. They like rivers and coastal sand banks. One type is the Indian skimmer. It is endangered. This is because its homes are being lost.
