Rynchops

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Skimmers are very special birds. They belong to the group called Rynchops. This name comes from Ancient Greek words. The words mean beak and face.

These birds are part of the Laridae family. This family includes gulls and terns. Skimmers are like a sister group to terns and noddies. They are found in South Asia, Africa, and the Americas. They were once called scissorbills.

These birds have a very unique way to eat. Their bottom beak is longer than the top beak. This is called a mandible. They fly low and fast over water. Their bottom beak slices the water's surface. It is ready to snap shut on small fish.

This works because their bills are in their binocular vision. This means they can see their beak clearly. They also have vertical slit-shaped pupils in their eyes. They are the only birds known to have these pupils.

Scientists first named this group in 1758. A Swedish naturalist named Carl Linnaeus did this work. He did it in his book called Systema Naturae. The type species is the black skimmer. Its name is Rynchops niger. Some people spell the name Rhynchops. This is the correct spelling used in later books. However, the first spelling was Rynchops. Most people still use that first spelling today.

Skimmers have very specific colors. Their foreheads and tails are white. The ends of their secondaries are also white. Their under parts are white too. The rest of their feathers are black.

The bottom half of their bill is crimson. Crimson is a bright red color. These birds live in tropical and subtropical places. They lay between three and six eggs. They lay these eggs on sandy beaches. The female bird sits on the eggs to keep them warm.

Skimmers often live in large flocks. They gather along rivers and coastal sand banks. These birds need specific homes to survive. One type is the Indian skimmer. It is considered endangered by the IUCN. This is because its nesting sites are disturbed. The lakes and rivers it uses are also being destroyed. This makes it hard for them to find food.

Protecting their water is a big job for people.
