They live on every continent, even near the icy edges of Antarctica. Some species live in the high Arctic, while others stay in warm places like the Galapagos Islands.

Most gulls have grey or white bodies with darker wings. They have heavy bodies and long wings for flying. Their feet are fully webbed to help them swim through the water. Most gulls are very smart and live in large, noisy groups called colonies.

Gulls are very good at finding food in many different ways. They are generalists, which means they can eat many different things. They eat fish, insects, crabs, and even seeds or fruit.

Some gulls use a clever trick to eat hard shells. They fly high and drop clams onto hard rocks to break them open. This takes practice, so older birds are usually better at it than young birds. Some gulls even use pieces of bread as bait to catch goldfish!

They can find food by swimming, walking on land, or even snatching it from the air.

Scientists have studied how gulls live and eat for a long time. Many gulls are related to birds called terns and skimmers. In the past, people used the name "mew" for these birds. This name actually comes from the sounds they make. Their calls can be harsh, wailing, or squawking.

Some larger gulls can live for a very long time. A European herring gull was once recorded living to be 49 years old. This shows how long these birds can thrive in the wild.

Gulls come in many different sizes and shapes. The little gull is only about 25 centimeters long. The great black-backed gull is much larger at 75 centimeters.

Most gulls have rounded tails, but a few have different shapes. The Sabine's gull has a forked tail, and the Ross's gull has a wedge-shaped tail.

Their bills can be different colors too. Larger white-headed gulls often have yellow bills with a red spot. Smaller gulls might have bills that are red, dark red, or black.

It is interesting to see how gulls live near people. Many gulls have learned to live in human towns and cities. They often follow fishing boats to find scraps of food.

Some gulls even rely on human landfills to find things to eat. Because they are so resourceful, they can survive even when their natural food changes. This ability to adapt helps them stay successful in a changing world. They are truly some of the most capable birds in the sea.
