This family includes wagtails, longclaws, and pipits. These birds are known for having medium to long tails. They are also called passerines, which means they are perching birds. Most of these birds have short necks and slender bodies. They are very important parts of the natural world. They can be found in many different places across the globe.

These birds find food in many ways.

Most of them are insectivores, which means they eat insects. They also eat spiders, worms, and small snails. They often look for food on the ground in open areas. Some birds live in very wet places. Others live in forests or near mountain streams. They choose their food based on what is available nearby. This helps them survive in their specific homes.

Scientists have studied how these birds are related.

In 2019, a study looked at 56 of the 68 known species. This study used molecular science to look at their DNA. The researchers found that the birds form six major groups. They discovered that some pipits are actually closely related to longclaws. For example, the striped pipit and African rock pipit belong with longclaws. This changed how we understand their family tree.

There are many interesting facts about their size and looks.

Longclaws are the largest members of this family. A Fülleborn's longclaw can weigh as much as 64 g. Pipits and wagtails are smaller, weighing between 15 and 31 g. The smallest might be the yellowish pipit. Most pipits have dull brown feathers. However, some birds like the golden pipit are much brighter. Wagtails can have striking colors like black, white, and yellow.

You can see how these birds fit into the world around them.

Most of them build their nests right on the ground. There, they lay up to six speckled eggs. They live in habitats ranging from the shore to high mountains. Some wagtails even fly all the way to Alaska to breed. This shows how much they can travel. Whether they are in a forest or a field, they are always busy. They are truly amazing little creatures.
